Girls State History

"The experience of a lifetime!" No matter what other words you hear when speaking to former participants in Colorado Columbine Girls State, it always seems to boil down to one point - there's nothing else like it!

Colorado Columbine Girls State is a program of the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Colorado. With a history dating back over 60 years, the program is a hands-on training session in local and state goverment, voting, the legislative process, patriotism and the rights and duties of all citizens of the United States.

Girls State programs are one week long and are held during the summer at college campuses in all 50 states around the nation. Colorado Columbine Girls State is held at Western State College in Gunnison. Dates for the current session in Colorado are June 14-19, 2009.

Girls State goes to FLBA Conference

Girls State Director, Rochelle Whitney, and staff members attended the state FBLA conference Monday, April 20, 2009 in Vail.

Director Whitney believes the students who participate in FBLA and similar activities have the leadership qualities we seek in Girls State delegates. Applicants and school representatives are reminded that the priority application deadline is May 1, 2009. For additional information, call Director Whitney at 719-440-7967.

Welcome Colorado employees

Colorado Columbine Girls State gives a hearty welcome to State of Colorado employees who learned about our program in the February edition of Stateline. We are ready to provide you with information for that young woman in your life who may be eligible to attend this unique leadership program. Priority application deadline is May 1st with additional applications taken on a space-available basis after that time.

Your fully tax-deductible financial support of the program is also welcome through Friends of Girls State.
